Rashida Jones Asks Where Are The Positive Role Models?
Written by Celebrity Blogger on March 19, 2008 – 4:55 pm -Rashida Jones is my girl right now. Here’s what she had to say on the state of our young girls.
“I think about what it would be like to have a daughter now, one who is influenced by Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears - and, ugh, it’s so depressing…Where are the other young Hollywood role models who are cool, smart, and out there doing something with their lives? Maybe Miley Cyrus? There’s a definite responsibility that comes with being famous. You shouldn’t be able to just…look pretty.” Source
AMEN to that! I was actually having a conversation about this very topic the other day. Parents need to be more involved in the shaping of their children.
With all these negative influences on TV, the radio, the internet, and magazines; parents REALLY have to make an effort to ensure that kids aren’t going around thinking that being dumb and cute is cool. It’s not something you can just sit back and say “I raised my kid right”, you actually have to make sure your kids are involved in constructive activities and make sure they are around positive people. Gone are the days where you could sit back and think your kids would turn out like you.
It’s a battle out there and something is going to get their attention. Would you rather it be something you chose, or something they chose with a little assistance from peer pressure?

LL Cool J: Young Black Men Should Seek Out Fathers
Written by Celebrity Blogger on March 17, 2008 – 6:35 am -
LL Cool J is telling young men that they need to seek out positive father figures or else they’ll face the consequences.
“In black culture in general, in African-American culture, the least discussed thing amongst men is the fact that they really wish they had fathers… There’s a lot of single black women who did the best that they could and that’s a beautiful thing, but they don’t know how necessary a father is in a kid’s life and how much guys miss that deep down inside…That’s why they gravitate towards gangs. That’s why they gravitate toward older guys who may lead them in a negative direction, because they just want to be embraced by a man.”
I’ll save my social commentary, but I agree with him; that’s why I have a hard time saying “congratulations” when I hear that a young woman with no partner is expecting.

PSA: Be a Voice Against Violence
Written by Celebrity Blogger on March 11, 2008 – 11:24 am -Janet Jackson, Ashanti, Heather Headley, Andre 3000 and others urge you to “Be a Voice Against Violence” with this public service announcement.
All I have to say is that when you think it’s ok to be hateful towards one group of people, you are saying it’s ok to be that way towards any group of people. You may think you are immune, “I’m not gay, I’m not this, I’m not that” but pretty soon someone will find something that you ARE.

Spike Lee Recieves $50,000 Award
Written by Celebrity Blogger on February 15, 2008 – 11:16 am -
Spike Lee was awarded the Wexner Prize, which is an award that goes to artists who are “consistently original, influential and challenging to convention.”
That’s a description of Spike Lee if I ever heard one!
“Spike Lee exemplifies what the Wexner Prize was created to celebrate: a bold creative spirit who is unafraid to provoke and challenge us. He tests the American mind, and its attitudes, assumptions and values, and in doing so, he has advanced American cinema in remarkable ways,” Les Wexner said in a statement.
Lee is the 13th artist to receive the award since it’s inception in 1992.
